Tips for a great dog walk
Always bring water
Several routes — including Boltby and Silton Forest — have no natural water sources. Always pack a portable bowl and enough water for the whole walk.
Livestock areas
Keep dogs on leads near sheep and cattle at all times. This applies particularly at Sutton Bank, Carlton Bank, and Hood Hill where livestock can be present.
Wear the right footwear
Paths at Cod Beck Reservoir and Gormire Lake can become muddy after rain. Waterproof boots or trail shoes are strongly recommended for woodland and moorland routes.
Download a route map
A number of these routes are in National Park or forest land. Download the relevant OS map section or use a walking app before setting off, especially for longer routes.
Check the weather
Moorland and hilltop walks — Sutton Bank, the Hambleton Hills and Carlton Bank — can be very exposed in bad weather. Check the forecast and dress in layers.
Pick up after your dog
Bring enough bags and always clean up. This keeps the countryside clean and ensures these wonderful spaces stay accessible and welcoming for all walkers.
