Tips for a great day out

Thirsk Racecourse is one of the most relaxed and welcoming flat racing venues in the north of England. Whether it's your first time at the races or you're a seasoned racegoer, here's what to know.

  • Arrive early — gates open at 11am, giving you time to study the form and enjoy a drink before racing begins
  • Children under 16 enter free, making it a brilliant family day out through the summer season
  • Smart casual dress is welcomed in all enclosures — save the occasion outfits for the big feature racedays
  • The on-site car park is free; or take the train to Thirsk Station and enjoy a 5-minute walk to the course
  • Pre-book the Thomas Lord Restaurant for a premium experience — tables fill quickly on popular fixtures
  • Pick up a race card on arrival to follow each race, check the runners, and get the going report

Thirsk & its racecourse

🏭 Racecourse history

Thirsk Racecourse has hosted horse racing since 1855. During 1914–1923 the course closed for the First World War. The Tattersalls and Family Stand were built in 1967, and the Pavilion Stand followed in 1999.

Thomas Lord — founder of Lord's Cricket Ground — has a restaurant named in his honour at the course, honouring Thirsk's famous son.

🏒 Famous connections

The town of Thirsk is renowned as the home of veterinary author James Herriot (Alf Wight), whose books inspired All Creatures Great and Small. Thirsk also claims Thomas Lord, founder of Lord's Cricket Ground, as a native son.

The Chestnut Room owners and trainers facility at the racecourse opened in September 2018.

🛌 Stay near the course

Planning a race day trip? Thirsk has a great selection of accommodation right in the town centre — all within easy reach of the racecourse.
