🏭 Racecourse history
Thirsk Racecourse has hosted horse racing since 1855. During 1914–1923 the course closed for the First World War. The Tattersalls and Family Stand were built in 1967, and the Pavilion Stand followed in 1999.
Thomas Lord — founder of Lord's Cricket Ground — has a restaurant named in his honour at the course, honouring Thirsk's famous son.
🏒 Famous connections
The town of Thirsk is renowned as the home of veterinary author James Herriot (Alf Wight), whose books inspired All Creatures Great and Small. Thirsk also claims Thomas Lord, founder of Lord's Cricket Ground, as a native son.
The Chestnut Room owners and trainers facility at the racecourse opened in September 2018.
