Pet Friendly Thirsk

If you are in or around the Thirsk area and looking for the best places to walk your dog, here are some popular and scenic spots:

  1. Sutton Bank (North York Moors National Park)
  2. Sutton Bank offers spectacular views over the Vale of Mowbray and the Yorkshire Dales. There are several walking routes, including the White Horse Walk, which takes you past the famous Kilburn White Horse, a large hill figure of a horse cut into the hillside.
Dog-friendly features are large open spaces, well-maintained paths and great views for long walks with your dog.
Keep dogs on leads in areas with livestock and ensure they're under control on the cliff edges.

  3. Cod Beck Reservoir
  4. On the outskirts of Thirsk near Osmotherley, this reservoir offers a beautiful circular walk with a mix of woodland and waterside paths.
Dogs can enjoy a splash in the water, and the circular route is easy to follow and not too long. The paths can get muddy after rain, so bring suitable footwear.

  5. Thirsk Riverside Walk
  6. A local and peaceful walk that follows the River Cod Beck through Thirsk. It is a flat and an easy route, making it perfect for a gentle stroll with your dog.
The riverside path is quiet and away from traffic, with lots of opportunities for dogs to explore and keep an eye out for local wildlife along the river.

  7. Boltby Forest
  8. Just a short drive from Thirsk, Boltby Forest offers a variety of forest tracks and paths for longer or shorter walks. It’s a great place for your dog to roam in a safe and enclosed area with shaded woodland paths, perfect for warm days, and ample space for off-leash walking in designated areas.
Make sure to bring water for your dog as forest walks can be long and there are no natural water sources within the forest.

  9. The Hambleton Hills
  10. The Hambleton Hills provide challenging and scenic walking trails, great for dogs that need a good amount of exercise. The paths offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside with open spaces and scenic landscapes, offering both flat walks and more challenging terrain.
Ideal for active dogs, but be mindful of the steeper trails.

  11. Silton Forest
  12. Located to the north of Thirsk, Silton Forest is another great woodland area for dog walking, with plenty of shaded routes and paths to explore. Wide forest paths and an off-leash-friendly atmosphere, especially in quieter areas.
This area is great for exploring but doesn’t have water sources, so make sure to pack a bowl and water for your dog.

  13. Carlton Bank
  14. Carlton Bank is part of the Cleveland Hills and offers stunning views from the top. It’s more of a hill walk, so it’s ideal for dogs that are energetic and enjoy a bit of a climb.
Open spaces, fresh air, and fewer crowds compared to more popular spots, but please keep your dog on a lead in areas with sheep, and be prepared for some steeper paths.

  15. Gormire Lakee
  16. A hidden gem, Gormire Lake is located in the North York Moors. It’s a peaceful lake surrounded by forest, and the area is great for a quiet walk with your dog. Shady forest paths and a tranquil lakeside setting.
The lake is not the easiest to access, so it’s better for dogs that enjoy a bit of adventure. The paths can also get muddy, so wear suitable shoes.

  17. Hood Hill
  18. Hood Hill is a short walk near Sutton Bank, offering a nice uphill trail with panoramic views at the top. It’s less crowded than some other spots and provides plenty of space for dogs to roam.
Plenty of open spaces and less foot traffic, making it perfect for dogs that like to explore without too many distractions. There is livestock in some areas, so keep your dog on a lead when necessary.

These places offer a variety of environments, from easy, flat walks by the water to more adventurous hill trails, catering to different activity levels and preferences for you and your fury friend.
